Creating A Pattern Swatch in Illustrator

Many years ago I noticed that Adobe Illustrator offers a very handy tool which allows you to easily create a pattern ‘swatch’ from a section of repeating pattern that you have created.

I did a doodle. On paper!

Ten years ago I started to play with the novelty of computer drawing and after hours and hours of practice (many!) became an accomplished ‘vector illustrator’ – creating illustrations (with my own hand still), but in Adobe Illustrator design software.
Over the last decade I’ve created many vector illustrations for clients, and have enjoyed the flexibility that vector illustrating offers. Not once during this time have I bothered to draw anything on paper, even for myself, for fun. Seriously.

Answers On Being A Freelancer
A short while ago I answered some questions for a graphic design student for their project, and posted the questions and answers on this blog. This week another blog reader (a designer who wants to move into freelancing at home) had some questions for me, their questions and my answers are below.
How many hours, on average, do you work per week? Unfortunately, as much as I’d love to (because I really enjoy my work/business) I don’t work crazy hours because I have a family to look after and spend time with also, so I’d say I work about 45hours a week. Read the rest of this entry »
