Witeq Corporate Brand Design

WiTEQ: A good solid company name, rolls of the tongue and decidedly easy to remember, but what does it mean?
I think this is an excellent company name, especially in view of the ‘domain name’ issues we are now faced with (finding an available domain for the company name you want). I wrote a piece about What A Difference A Name Makes some time ago.
We were asked by WiTEQ to design their corporate brand design, and indeed we did. I was particularly pleased to avoid ‘emitting signals’ icons within the design – but I’ll get onto that soon enough.
First of all I should tell you what/who Witeq are:
WiTEQ is connected with ‘wifi’ – you may have guessed from the name …hence why it’s such a good company name. The team at WiTEQ have worked together for many years and are experts in providing wireless technology solutions for businesses.
Avoiding Signals In The Design
Before designing for a client, as part of the research process, I often take a look at their competitors and others in a similar industry. For instance for WiTEQ I Googled the keyword ‘wifi’ to view the range of company logo designs that relate to wifi services.
It became clear to me that ‘emitting signals’ have been widely favoured by designers for this industry and as such, aiming to be original, I wanted to avoid this sort of imagery.
http://www.myhotspots.co.uk/ – big massive emitting signals either end of the text, pretty horrid logo to be honest anyway.
http://www.cisco.com/web/UK/index.html/ – emitting signals.
http://www.wifiradioreview.com/ – love the logo design, but there are those signals again.
http://www.deensonwifisolutions.com/ – the signal is actually moving this time.
http://advancedwifisolutions.com// – more signals.
Those that didn’t have signal lines, quite commonly had circular ‘waves’ of signal as the graphical icon for the logo. Again I wanted to avoid this.
Design Concepts Presented
So this below is one of my favorite concepts out of the three I presented to wiTEQ. I like this a lot, it emulates the progress bar one gets when viewing a wifi or other Internet signal on the receiving box.

Below is the actual chosen design. As you can see I’ve achieved the impression of a ‘flow’ or ‘signal’ without using those half moon lines seen so frequently elsewhere, and without using a circular emitting wave either.

Colour
Blue is a good choice for a technology business. Not only is it a cool shade and so easily associated with technology, but blue is also a colour favoured by most Europeans. especially men, and promotes feelings of trust.
