Fresh Designer Talent

Evolution and us blog

I saw a blog a moment ago that inspired me to start a new category called ‘Rising Stars Fresh Talent’. Not very succinct, I know.

Recent graphic design college graduate (Craig Morrison of Creative Ambition) added me on Twitter and as I often do when a designer adds me, I went to visit his website and check out his work.

Considering he’s only graduated from college and not even started his design degree yet I saw great promise in his work compared to the portfolio of many aspiring designers of this age/experience. Samples below …

Nothing like my own work, more that sort of fresh modern look that large design agencies favour, and that I do admire … yet I seem to struggle to create myself.

Each time I try to create something fresh and clean the urge to ‘add more’ to it comes upon me. Then even when I do manage to design something that is clean and modern and minimal, my client goes ‘hmmm, I want it more graphically rich’ … I guess they saw my graphically rich portfolio and hired me for that purpose so I should not be surprised that clean minimalistic design work is not what they want from me in most cases :D

Anyway, I digress (as usual).

When visiting his website and clicking through to his Evolution and Us’ Blog, I noticed something of interest. This is a collaborative blog between four different design graduates – I felt this quite unique. Not only that, it’s a high quality blog and each contributor is of an excellent standard considering they are all novices/students.

Marco Pocai also has a strong portfolio .. below:

Look at the amazing standard of work produced by Kieran Reilley below, the Pears project is gorgeous!

… and Marina Munro also has some stunning work in her portfolio:

I think these four are well worth watching for the future – not only are they talented, they exhibit a strong commitment and interest in their chosen career path. When one has talent and drive, you can’t really fail.

So this is the first of my poorly titled ‘Rising Stars Fresh Talent’ blogs, hopefully it won’t be my last :D

  • Hi Amanda,

Just wanted to say thank you again for the blog post. Exactly what we are needing to get our work out there given we are all off to further education now.

Just a quick update to your post since i hadn’t added the website, but Evolution and Us actually has 6 designers involved. Aileen Poe and Dominic Ralston are also members and their website are now up and running.

Give them a look as well, some nice work from both designers.

  • Thanks for the links, I had a good look round :)

Aileen has some lovely work, I especially like her work on stamps which is fabulous and I enjoyed looking at the Love Paper project too.

Dominic’s Tiger Energy work is amazing, really love those!

I notice a lot of you have been working on packaging designs, which are all exceptionally impressive projects. I hope you’ve noted my blog and link to http://www.thedieline.com blog? Any one who loves packaging design HAS to visit this blog. I love The Dieline! :)
