The 'customer service' experienced with cheap logo design may be fine, but the final outcome isn't likely to be up to the standard of a firm which charges more.

By final outcome I mean things such as;

- Originality: Essential for registering the trademark to your design for instance)
- Practicality: Is it readable when printed small, can it be embroidered, does it work in black and white also.
-Longevity: Will it stand the test of time without becoming horribly 'dated' within the next ten years.

...and other considerations taking into account when designing.

It is rare that all of these things are covered (or even considering who your target market are when designing) by a design firm that designs at a very low cost. They simply cannot turn enough profit at the same time as hiring designers that are sufficiently experienced to cover all of those bases for your business at the same time.

They may have a few designs that accidentally cover all of these bases, but it is typical when viewing the portfolio (bearing in mind that this is their BEST work) of low cost design services, that errors can be spotted that will do the business a disservice over the long term.

My blog does not aim to imply that 'online' service providers are inferior simply because they are online. Many high quality design services liase with their clients online and over the telephone only and have few local clients, myself included.

Investing money doesn't 'guarantee' a great design, however not investing enough money near guarantees that you WON'T end up with a great design that will be an asset to your business and underpin your marketing and branding activites.

It's important to invest appropriate sums in design at the same time as carefully selecting your service provider to ensure that they have the capability to deliver for your business.

Not necessarily all cheap logo designs are of sub-par quality. I recently got a logo design for £89 from http://www.logodesignplanet.co.uk and the logo design turned out better than I had previously envisioned. The design team was accommodating to my requests (as they offer unlimited edits) and the designer handling my project was very helpful in providing his inputs. Highly recommended. Compared to my previous experience of going to a local design firm in my neighbourhood, the experience of having my logo design made online is way better than doing it face to face where the time and money invested do not necessarily produce a quality logo design in the end.

The client for those projectsl ogo designswas very happy with the end product… but only because they made so many changes to the logo designs that it ended up being far different than what I had came up with.

Pleased to see you here, I'm surprised with such a great piece of writing that you don't have a blog of your own actually.

I do not mind at all if you use the info - the more people that know we are worth every penny of our fees the better!

Well I got the info off them, so it's more about if they mind or not :)

I don't think it's likely they will mind you mentioning some of the stats if at the same time you refer to and link to their article that the stats are plucked from.

I agree, it's a pretty depressing state of affairs. Especially when one searches for 'logo design' most of the early results are for companies on the lower end of the design fees scale.

I did feel uplifted after reading the article by Black Dog Square, especially the bit about the amount of these companies being sued. It's helps one to remain confident in the fact that there are solid reasons why we are more expensive.

Amanda, a good and quite depressing article, especially the "do-it-yourself" logo design website, just add colour, your company name etc! These sites devalue design, treating it as an off the self product, with no thought or consideration involved!
