Design DOES matter

Is graphic design just all about making things look pretty? Does anyone care if it looks pretty? Does it directly affect business success?
Of course design directly affects business success …… but how to prove it?
Well today I have a fab message from a client who a few weeks ago had their web site re-designed by us and thankfully is enough on the ball about the their site performance to note that there is a difference in performance between it’s original ‘lack of design’ and it’s newly designed state.
QUOTE - ““FYI it’s a bit early to open the champagne but since the redesign Google Analytics reports the trend of bounce rate has been down and the number of page views and average time on site has gone up. Slightly, but significantly!”“
A well designed website isn’t just about it looking attractive and professional, it’s about a designers awareness of white space, layout and positioning to ensure that the important page elements are positioned correctly to ensure better website performance.
And as far as ‘looking good’ is concerned, although ‘pretty’ seems (to some) unimportant, if it didn’t have any sort of bearing on sales why would the retail giants fit out their shop windows with extravagant displays (and change them frequently). Because big brands monitor their marketing and hence, as do Likemind Services, are aware of it when design and appearance influence sales figures.
Customers of all sorts - whether retail or business to business services are drawn to something which is presented to them in a professional attractive package and with a designers eye for ensuring that important textual information is quick and easy to digest.

Looking pretty definitely DOES count, but you need the knowledge that goes with it too! Nice design, and great feedback!
