Funky Names Yo

No, I’m not some sad 34 year old woman into gangster rap……don’t you just love funky business names though? I know I do.

I remember in the ‘olden days’ we only really used to have names like Turner & Son, and Shelley’s Nails and what not for business owners, but now that has completely changed and (in my opinion, and it’s my blog so I shall force said opinion upon you ;) ) it’s almost entirely down to the spectacular rise of the Internet.

As Internet businesses launched all over cyber-space, they decided that because they were ‘modern’ and ‘innovative’ they needed modern and innovative company names to match. Obviously an Internet business is no longer anything novel….but the funky unusual names persist.

Rather like A-listers bestowing their children with ‘innovative’ names such as Peaches, Apple, Suri, Pixie, Poppy Honey, and Daisy Boo to name just a few, Internet entrepreneurs wanting to add to the growing wave of ‘online only’ businesses desired (and still desire it seems) that their children also have original names, and so out came to play companies like Google, Moonpig, Yoox, Expedia, Zazzle and Kelkoo.

Even the small business owner wants a slice of the funky name action with firms trading as Cheekaboo, Nappyhead, Moustique, Brown Loves Pink, Lollipop Kisses, Snootie Patooties and many more.

The benefits to thinking up a completely unique and indeed probably funky company name are;
- You have a better chance of the domain name being available to purchase in .com and .co.uk (strongly recommended)
- It allows you to create a strong brand because your brand imagery can be as original as the name you have created, hence you are less likely to be confused with a competitor.

The downside:

- It might be harder for potential customers to remember the name, especially if you don’t have a big marketing budget to repeatedly hammer home that brand name until they can’t forget it even if they wanted to.
- Even worse they can forget how to spell it and hence struggle to find your website again…best make sure that unusual name is easy to spell and pronounce or it could become a liability.
