Yikes – 2012 Olympics Logo
In case any one is in any doubt, I’m definitely one of the 84% of people (last count on the BBC web site poll) that do not like the 2012 London Olympics ‘brand’.
I find it ugly, lacking in meaning, and lacking in mass appeal. You can be confronted with the horror of it at;
Some have said that it looks better on the film than it does static, but I think that’s just because it’s zipping around so much on the film you can’t see it properly!
When I see their website ask us to create our own design (nothing new, just abstract versions of the original design they have come up with at a cost of £400,000 by the way) I speculate if maybe they wanted people to talk about the design, if that is part of the brand strategy.
For instance they have a place on their site where they offer code for you to place onto your website that randomly shows the ‘new designs’ in their gallery. People tempted to do this, such as myself (top of this blog) are then promoting the brand ….so perhaps they wanted the new design to be so hideous as to -
- Get us talking about it in the millions.
- Get us all keen on re-designing the brand, but making sure that we can only do that on their site in a way that is the same as the current brand.
-Get us to advertise the brand with the code they provide of the ‘new designs’
I think I may be onto something!
UPDATE 5.6.07
Someone on Ecademy (my favourite online business networking website) has made a rather frightening connection between this logo and the Tiswas logo of yesteryear….scarily similar!
Another update from the BBC is – 2012 Logo May Have To Be Withdrawn
